Matthew Blevins

MattMatthew, known as “Matt” to his friends and associates, was born in Baltimore, Maryland in June, 1974 and grew up in the Baltimore suburb of Pasadena.

In 1996, after graduating magna cum laude with a degree in Economics from Mount Saint Mary’s College, Matt worked briefly with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. He then moved on to Legg Mason, a regional brokerage and money management firm with headquarters in Baltimore. While there he discovered that his mildly misanthropic tendencies and consistent irritation at being told what to do were strongly at odds with his position at the bottom rung of the corporate ladder.

This discovery, coupled with an innate entrepreneurial drive, led to the inevitable founding of his first company in 1997. Together with lifelong friend and longtime business partner Mick Wist, Matt has engaged in various entrepreneurial pursuits and now looks back at his former workaday life with a sense of detached bemusement.

Matt enjoys writing brief biographies for web sites and produces all of them in the third person, even when writing about himself. He also enjoys aggressive lounging and general lollygagging. Further, he is convinced that he was born in the wrong era, and would prefer to have been in the Lewis and Clark party as they forged across the American West in the early 19th century. In that spirit, Matt swears that he will one day move to Montana, purchase a huge spread of land, and live out his days fishing for trout in his own personal river.

Weekend Fishing, Pygmy Goats and General Friday Nonsense

By: Matt, May 16th, 2008

I can’t say that this post will relate to employment in any way, but I’ll try…
Thus far today I’ve done very little work myself, instead spending most of my time gathering fishing equipment, putting some 6-lb. test on my girlfriend’s light-action fishing rod, packing a bag and doing some laundry. That’s “kind of” working, but […]

Hidden Jobs, Careerism on Steroids and a ton of Recruiters in One Place

By: Matt, April 3rd, 2008

OK, I admit it…I’ve had my head in the sand for months now, brazenly ignoring this space to work on other projects and hibernate through a not-so-brutal Maryland winter. But it’s April now (it’s still too cold), so I decided to pop my head out the door both literally - by doing some yard work […]

Young Real Estate Agents Facing Tough Times, Great Rewards

By: Matt, March 19th, 2008

I read a Baltimore Sun article a few days back that noted the struggles that young people face when choosing the real estate industry as a profession. In very basic terms, the factors noted in the article are self-evident. That is, people looking to buy or sell a home or commercial property will often “discriminate” […]

It’s 2008 in the Recruitosphere - Now What?

By: Matt, January 3rd, 2008

In any employment situation, upheaval is generally the norm - just ask the average American worker, who will plow through about 16 jobs during their working years. As a result, predicting that there will be major changes in the “recruitosphere,” that a major company will layoff thousands of employees or that a big name sports […]

Work-Life Balance a Hot Topic

By: Matt, December 12th, 2007

It’s been a while since I’ve written - ironically, it’s probably because my own work-life balance is out of whack. Not that I’m slacking, mind you - just been working very hard on other projects! I don’t think anyone would say that this concept, i.e. - the “work-life balance” is particularly new, but it’s certainly […]

How is Billick NOT on the Hot Seat?

By: Matt, November 9th, 2007

Last year at this time, I wrote a few posts about how Brian Billick could be a nominee for NFL coach of the year. He had fired one of his best friends from the offensive coordinator position in the name of saving his team, the Baltimore Ravens, and taken over the play calling for the […]

Personal Branding Summit

By: Matt, November 7th, 2007

For those in the hunt for a new job, and even for those looking to advance in their current career, personal branding has become one the best ways to secure a favorable impression from hiring managers or current bosses. The concept of personal branding has become popular enough that there is even a “Personal Branding […]

Working from Home is Sometimes Just Hard Work

By: Matt, November 2nd, 2007

In case anyone missed it, I work from home - I work on this blog, on the Insourced site and job search application in general, and on various other projects and investments. For the most part, I revel in this fact and, to be quite honest, I have it better than a lot of folks […]

Thumbs Blazing is the Quintessential Gen Y Image

By: Matt, November 1st, 2007

C.M. Russell over at Secrets of the Job Hunt notes that a CareerBuilder study shows some major differences between Generation Y, Generation X and Baby Boom employees. One of those major differences, of course, is the way each generation prefers to communicate. The youngest generation of the three, Generation Y, prefers communicating via text message, […]

Smart Development Vs. Job Growth at Terrapin Run?

By: Matt, October 30th, 2007

That’s what some say about a proposed development known as “Terrapin Run” in Eastern Allegany County, Maryland, but the truth may in fact be much different. The concept of “growth vs. conservation” is not a new one, but in addition to an old concept being run out before the public again, the same age-old reactions […]
