Paralegal Job Boards
We’ve become a bit obsessed lately with the concept of “vertical” or niche job boards. We’re unapologetic about our conviction that this is the future of the industry (perhaps combined with some social/networking elements), and we are continuing in the direction with a series of job boards that make up the Locate Jobs Network.
One of our verticals at this point is a paralegal job board (www.locateparalegaljobs.com), and we’ve noticed that there are relatively few sites in this niche already. Someone was fortunate enough to have the foresight to register paralegaljobs.com and produce a pretty nice board there. Generally, it has been my experience that paralegal positions, if they are catered to on a job search site, are lumped together with other legal jobs (specifically, those for attorneys). This is entirely appropriate, but it raises the question – exactly how “niche” do you want to go?
As for the Locate Jobs Network, there is almost no such thing as “too niche,” as long as the site will serve a specific group of employers and potential employees, so we’ve got no problem at all separating paralegal positions from other law jobs. It was just one of those things that wandered into my head though – is there really *anything* that is too niche? Too specific? I guess one could argue that there is – I mean, if no one is searching for “infinite loop unlooper jobs” (hat tip to Doug) in Crisfield, Maryland (population just north of 2,700), then is that industry/geography combination worthy of its own job board? Probably not, but I had to make up a job title (or borrow one) and choose one of the smallest cities that I know of to reach far enough. So, I guess I’m thinking in answer to this question…there isn’t such a thing as “too niche.”

I tend to like more than less differentiation myself. I think it brings clarity to the job seeker.
