Maryland Jobs Overview

By: Matt, October 24th, 2008

Maryland has often been called “America in miniature” due to the fact that within its borders can be found landscapes, cities, towns, industries, culture and events that are representative of the U.S. as a whole. From the ancient Appalachian Mountains in the West to the seashore in the East, Maryland features a variety of other landscapes as well. The Piedmont region of Western Maryland is shared with other east coast states and is marked in places by rugged ridgelines that slope steeply to valleys that are often marked by rivers and creeks. In other areas, plateaus feature oak and pine forests that offer excellent opportunities for sportsmen of all stripes. Flatter land is to be found in the southern part of the state and on the Eastern Shore, where the state’s vacation haven, Ocean City, is located. The focal point of the state’s geography is most definitely the Chesapeake Bay, which is the largest estuary in the United States and which has long been known as a source of seafood (especially the blue crab) that is enjoyed locally and exported throughout the country.

Culturally, Maryland’s nickname of the “Old Line State” is quite telling. Directly on the south side of the Mason Dixon Line, Maryland’s more rural areas, located to the South, East and West, generally have a Southern culture, while Central Maryland is dominated by a culture more akin to the Northeastern states that emanates from Baltimore and Washington, DC. In 2007, Maryland had the distinction of having the highest per capita income in the United States, supplanting New Jersey with a mark just of $68,000.

Maryland was founded as a province in 1628 by George Calvert, 1st Lord Baltimore both as a means to recoup earlier business losses through tobacco trade and as a haven for Catholicism. The province of Maryland became the colony of Maryland under Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Lord Baltimore in 1632 and was later the seventh state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, in 1788.
