Follow Up on Interviews in Style

I was reading the Jibber Jobber blog today, as I often do, and Jason Alba shared some wisdom from Heather Wieshlow about following up on an interview with an article. If that sounds a bit odd, it’s because it’s definitely thinking “outside the box.” The standard follow up is to simply e-mail or, even better, call the hiring manager or interviewer.

After you send your resume to someone, or have an interview (whether it’s an informational interview, or a first interview, or whatever), you want to follow-up, right? You want to be on the short list! We’ve been told to follow-up with a phone call, or a thank you letter, or something like that. In fact, a thank you letter could include something along the lines of “oh yeah, I also wanted to mention that…” so you can further show them how wonderful and great you are.

How’s that for personal branding? In the Web 2.0 world, writing articles is perhaps the most popular method of getting the word out – about your website, your blog, yourself, your book, whatever…demonstrate to a hiring manager that you a) can write well and b) know what you’re talking about, and it will definitely leave an impression, if for no other reason than the fact that sending an article is a different approach. Really, though, it’s not just “different,” it’s also a way to show a hiring manager just how you think, how you communicate, how you take initiative, etc. In short, it’s a pretty good idea!

Hi nice post, i have come across your site once before when searching for something so i was just wondering something. I love your theme, would it happen to be a free one i can download, or is it a custom one you had made? In a few weeks i will be launching my own site, i’m not great with designs but i really like the style of your site so it would be cool if i could find (or pay for) something with a similar look. :) Thanks!
