What is Your Time Worth?

We have to address this question every time we look around our house or apartment and realize that there’s a problem that we might be able to fix on our own. Maybe you need to paint a room, remove some wallpaper, or fix a leaking toilet. Maybe you want to hang ceiling fans. Whatever the chore may be, within reason, it is likely that you don’t have to be a professional tradesman in order to do the work.

But we all have to consider whether or not it is worth our time and effort to do the work ourselves or simply call a professional and pay him (or her) for his time and effort. In this mental tug of war, we often find ourselves unable to win. If we decide to forge ahead and do the work ourselves, we realize that there was a little more to the project than we initially thought. If we call a professional, we might discover that their fees seem a little high and that they can’t start for “two weeks.”

It’s a timeless dilemma and one that we face every day when determining whether or not we are being fairly compensated for our efforts at work. And then again when we decide whether it is worth it to mow our own lawn or call a plumber to install our new garbage disposal. Our time is valuable and so is our money. Every decision counts.
