Is it Easier to Ask for Forgiveness than Permission?

I heard that question asked recently and started thinking about how it applies to the typical workplace. There is a stark contrast between the people that are willing to make their own decisions and deal with consequences versus those who require approval and instruction before taking action. I’m willing to grant that every situation brings its unique circumstances, but I’d much prefer someone that is going to make a decision and act on it every time. I don’t want or need to know every move that someone is going to make.
As a manager or supervisor, the last thing you want are people that come to you with questions about the minutia of every task. That impedes production and breeds further confusion and indecision. Productive employees learn from their mistakes and apply them to future situations. It’s difficult to learn from mistakes if every move is cleared by a superior. It’s also difficult for an organization to sharpen its strategies or expand its corporate creativity when its functions are micro-managed.

If it feels right, do it. Deal with the consequences (and the rewards) as they arise.
