Does Anyone Search for a New Job in Good Weather?

That title is not a metaphor or anything fancy like that. It’s a simple question from a simple man. Having lived in Maryland my entire life, I have grown accustomed to distinct weather changes between each season of the year. The last few days have been pretty nice around here, with highs in the mid-70s and very little rain. We’re in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic spring, with early summer rapidly approaching.

I can’t help but notice that people seem a little more content with their lives in this weather. People are outside doing yardwork, golfing, playing with their kids and their pets. It just seems like it’s not a time when most people in this area are going to be putting any real effort into finding a new job.

And I really can’t find an argument for spending 2 hours online trying to find a new or better job when you can spend that time outside teaching your daughter how to ride a bike or walking in the park. I think that’s the mentality that most people have.

I couldn’t find any statistics on job search activity by month or geography, but I would be willing to bet that the activity decreases as the weather warms in the northern half of the country. Warm weather means planning activities and vacations and experiencing the outside world. When those options are on the table, the job search seems to lose importance.
