Google Invests $600 Million and Creates 200 New Jobs Near Charleston, South Carolina

By: Mick, April 6th, 2007

I’ve been in Myrtle Beach all week, so I thought it would be a good idea to write something about the job market in South Carolina. The Sun News reported yesterday that Google is building a new data center just outside of Charleston and that the $600 million investment is going to create about 200 new jobs. Google expects the data center to be fully operational within 18 months.

The jobs at the new data center are expected to pay roughly $48,000 per year, plus benefits. South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is excited about Google’s arrival and stated, “Given the stature of this company and the magnitude of this investment, this is a real win for South Carolina and will have a tremendous impact on the local and state economy.”

From an outsider’s perspective, this seems pretty similar to the type of investments made by large manufacturing companies in small American towns during the early half of the 20th century. Granted, those factories often created thousands of jobs, not hundreds, but the impact on a town or region may be as significant. Google’s mere presence in an area will provide immediate IT credibility and any number of support companies could emerge simply to serve one of Google’s massive new data centers. In addition to IT services, companies providing building maintenance and security services, among other services, will also be needed.

    Hi All -

I’ve responded to each of the above requests directly via e-mail, but I wanted to post here in case anyone else is looking for more information.

The main link to apply for jobs at Google is http://services.google.com/jobs/application. However, I didn’t see the South Carolina location listed in their locations list, so you may want to note that in your cover letter or comments when you submit your resume.

Good luck in your job search!

    Mick
