Follow-up is Key Component of Job Search
In a recent post on Recruiting.com, Jason Davis talks about the importance of Follow Up Calls in the hiring process, especially from the perspective of recruiters and their candidates trying to impress the hiring client in a highly competitive atmosphere. While his example is appropriate and even includes a nice script for candidates to use when following up with employers, I think his advice is even more important for candidates in a direct-hire situation (no recruiter involved). In many instances, a good recruiter will do some follow-up work on her own and make certain that her candidates are always first and fresh in the minds of her clients.
Individual job seekers, without the representation of a recruiter, don’t have that luxury. You must handle the task of reinforcing your nterest to potential employers and putting forth the effort to do so in a timely manner. Jason recommends a phone call to drive that point home and I agree completely. The phone call trumps both an e-mail or a hard-copy follow-up, although I would recommend an e-mail if the phone call results in having to leave a voice-mail for your company contact.
As a rule, if you want the job, you must let them know during the interview and remind them via a follow-up phone call. Every bit of effort matters during the job search, and the follow-up could be the nudge that puts you over the top.

I agree, I recently got hired a couple months ago and followed all those steps. I am now sitting in the office promoting our http://www.careersandeducation.com website. Check it out, great content in there!
Just following up on the follow up, seeing if my comment is still up there. Check out online education information at the Westwood Campus!
