Minimum Wage Legislation to be Fast-tracked
By: Mick, December 4th, 2006
The proposed increase in the federal minimum wage has been bumped to the top of the legislative agenda for the upcoming session, according to the Associated Press:
The new Democrat-controlled 110th Congress convenes on Jan. 4 and Pelosi of California has made clear that raising the federal minimum wage is a top priority she wants the House to accomplish in its first 100 hours of legislative business.
It is all but impossible to say what, if any, ramifications this will have for future job growth and cost of living expenses for the working poor. Many states had already raised the minimum wage and the number of workers in this country that are currently earning the federal minimum wage of $5.15 per hour is estimated at just over 500,000, a tiny fraction of the U.S. laborforce of over 130 million.
