Google Acquires YouTube
Google acquiring YouTube isn’t that big of a deal to the job seeking world, but it does reiterate one important point that we’ve made before: Use technology to your advantage when seeking a job. If that means creating a video profile of yourself (not the MySpace kind, but the professional kind), go for it. Many professionals are using video profiles to indicate to potential employers their “hireability”…showing that they not only have the chops to make a go at an employer’s open position, but the personality and gumption to be a successful part of a company’s team.
Now, it’s worth noting that this is Google’s biggest acquisition to date ($1.65 Billion in stock) and that when Google pays attention to something it’s typically worth taking note yourself. Meaning what, exactly? Well, this is BIG. Google is basically saying that they want to jump into the video fray badly enough to endure the lawsuits that are sure to pile up with their new acquisition, and though those lawsuits are merely lost battles in a winning war, it still speaks volumes about the value of consumer created content in the form of video. In short, if you’re looking for a new job, get your professional video profile up and running, dammit! While most folks out there are creating a bunch of video garbage (it still amazes me what gets noticed on YouTube), there is clearly “traction” in this arena and recruiters and HR departments are paying attention.
