Controlling Your Image with Personal Branding
By: Mick, September 25th, 2006
One of the best resources out there for job seekers and those interested in the employment industry in general is Secrets of the Job Hunt by C.M. Russell. His recent post linking to the JibberJobber blog offers a great illustration of exactly how savvy job seekers can leverage the power of the Web and social networking to generate interest from potential employers. David Gannaway is the guy who has taken the personal branding bull by the horns and launched a site dedicated to promoting himself to potential employers.
While it is outstanding that David has developed his site (and apparently a blog as well) for the purposes of branding and presenting himself to employers, I think it’s at least equally as important that he now has taken control of the his image on the Web. Given the fact that employers are now vigorously searching the Web to research potential hires, it is extremely important that job seekers have a forum in which they can present information in a controlled context. Your communications in your Facebook or MySpace account may not paint the most professional or flattering picture of your qualifications or your personality. But when you create a site that is geared toward employers, you are able to explain your background and your world views much more succinctly, and in a context that you’ve created.
