A Weekend at Bernie’s: A Lesson in Reporting Fraud
By: Mick, September 21st, 2006
This awful/classic late 80s comedy was recently on one of my over-priced “premium” cable movie channels and Allison opted to watch it in lieu of the 17th consecutive airing of Wedding Crashers on another station. Fair enough. I hadn’t sat through an entire Bernie’s since ‘89 and I was half-reading something anyway. Although the plot of the film is far too complex to explain here, the movie involves two corporate employee heroes who uncover a massive fraud operation in their insurance company. They immediately report the fraud to their boss (Bernie), who is actually the one behind the fraud. As a result, Bernie decides they need to be whacked…and hilarity ensues.
The heroes from Bernie’s did what they thought was the right thing. They immediately reported their suspicion of fraud to their boss and he tried to kill them for it (I won’t ruin the ending). The point is, in addition to informing a superior about suspected fraud or embezzlement, it’s equally important to document your findings and create a record of what you have found and when you found it. Otherwise, you could be implicated, wrongly accused, or set up as a scapegoat if and when the authorities get involved.
